What happens if you get scared half to death twice?
(this is a quote by Steven Wright, but I thought it would make a good question)

funny...
I have actually been "scared half to death" a number of times.. so aparantly being scared half to death twice does not result in actual deat... unless I am walking around dead and don't realize it...
I also think that it must shorten your life somewhat to get really really scared ... or maybe not... maybe it makes you feel even more alive... maybe being scared half to death acts as a sort of immunization to paralizing fear... the more times something DOESN'T kill you, the less you fear it....
i have a concept about fear. i think that fear creates an adrenaline response in the body, and because most of us have addictive personalities, we get addicted to the adrenaline rush of being all worked up over the fear of something. like joggers get addicted to their own adrenaline. and because in all actuality, fear has just as much energy moving power in the universe as love energy does...then holding on to a fearful idea like 'i will never have enough money' will create exactly that scenario; you will most likely arrange your life in a way where you won't have enough money. of course, this is all much easier realized than practiced, and i experience this on a very personal basis. on the other hand, my mother used to think it was the funniest thing in the world to scare the living daylights out of us on a regular basis. she was forever hiding around a corner or something and would then just scare the stuffing out of us. it used to make me so mad at her. she just thought it was hilarious. she said my hair would stand on end. now, i don't really have the heart to do that to my own kids. we sometimes play hide around the corner and boo! but not hide around the corner silently and wait then jump out and make some god awful noise like a huge demon raptor. if getting scared half to death lessens your lifespan, my expiration date was probably sometime last year. i think we can safely say that it doesn't.
I thought that this site might be helpful to you: http://www.coping.org/growth/fears.htm#negative Fear can:
Immobilize decision making.
Prevent you from overcoming your insecurity, prevent you from trusting in others, and prevent you from being willing to become vulnerable in order to grow.
Prevent you from being willing to let go of old habits or ways of thinking in order to change.
Make you resistant to all offers of help from others.
Terrify you and make you unwilling to venture out into the world, making you a prisoner in your home.
Stifle your motivation to pursue an education or a career.
Keep you locked in self-destructive behavior.
Prevent you from believing in your chances to become a fully functioning, healthy individual.
Be the reason why you find yourself stuck in old ways of acting and believing.
Be the roadblock to change and growth; if not overcome fear becomes the patterned way of living an unhealthy life-style.
Its up to you to get out of these patterns! Just start believing in yourself that you can do it!
I think there are really 2 kinds of fear - the good kind and the bad kind. The good kind is when you enjoy a rollercoaster ride or a scary movie, as opposed to the kind where you truly feel that you might die. I have experienced a fair share of both kinds. I agree, getting scared half to death twice doesn't kill you. However, I do attribute many, MANY of my gray hairs to my "close calls".
Michelle, I hate to admit it, but I have also enjoyed the "jumping out of nowhere" game - and I don't think those of us who enjoy it realize that some people just aren't "into it". My 3-year-old granddaughter LOVES that game, as did her dad when he was little, but I know that my daughter feels the way you do - she would rather not have experienced it. I think there are all levels of "fear junkies" and everybody is different.
So I guess my point is that everybody should celebrate our differences. Wouldn't this be a boring world if we all wanted the same things?
well, i don't think my mother's sick sense of funny really did much harm. it was all the rest of her parenting or lack thereof that probably led me to be the founder of the society for immoral repeat breeders.... and if a little kid is laughing and thinking the game is fun, then i see nothing wrong with it. if the little kid's hair is standing on end and they are screaming or trying to choke you, then you know you have gone too far. and incidentally, i do believe in myself. i don't have a lot of problems with paralyzing fear unless some stalker won't leave me alone after they have physically harmed me before, or someone nearly runs me off the road or something. but i appreciate the fact that the information got posted. fear has never kept me from being a good mom, from being myself(in whatever form i exist that day), or from expanding my career. considering that my career is raising children, i'd say that i've got it down to a peculiar and loving science. anonymous said...'it's up to you to get out of these patterns!' okay. you're obviously the expert....
According to seventh grade math, if you get scared half to death twice you have 1/4 of your life left. say you are 50 and youre supposed to live til you 80. You get scared to death twice, which means you have 1/4 of your lifespan still. Your lifespan is 30 years, multiply that by .25 and you have how long you will live. You should have gotten 7.5 years. 1/2 of 1 is 1/2. 1/2 of 1/2 is 1/4.
So now I'm wondering if you follow the math to the end, will it actually end up being infinite... like down to milliseconds, microseconds, and nanoseconds???
Is that right?
Also: I have done my fair share of scaring the crap out of my kids... I figure it was payback in advance for all the times they scared me once they got into high school... like for example driving a car into somebody's front porch, disappearing from a sleepover and not showing up until the next morning AFTER the police were out taking statements, stuff like that...
When I was a kid I was always afraid of something creepy under my bed. So, one night, my dad hid under the bed and grabbed a hold of my feet right after I had shut the light off and was about to jump in bed... scared me half to death!!
I paid him back good when I left South America on an airplane with a ticket to fly to Muskegon Michigan, but got off the plane in Kansas City and never got back on. I did call them about 3 weeks later...
That's just hilarious! That's even worse than hide around the corner silently and wait then jump out and make some god awful noise like a huge demon raptor.
Okay, I just have to tell my revenge story on this blog question, even if it is a day late! I have a sister who is 5 years older than me and she tormented me constantly growing up, including jumping out of nowhere and yelling "boo" and absoutely scaring the crap out of me constantly!
Well, revenge is sweet!!! One day when I was in grade school and she was in junior high, I got to stay home alone "sick" AFTER my big sis had left for school, so she didn't know I was at home. I normally came home from school after she was already home, and my parents were both working. It was wintertime and I watched for my sister to approach the house and hid in the closet, knowing she would open the closet door to hang her coat up and knowing that she thought she was in the house alone! Boy, did I get her! I scared the ever-loving CRAP out of her!!! And my parents were mad but I really didn't get in very much trouble because my mom KNEW how my sister always tormented me and she thought it was a pretty funny stunt!!! LOL!!!
This was definitely one of my finest moments growing up!!!

That is a shame that she put you through that. Often parents don't know how they can harm their children.

Do you ever get scared half to death that you might becoming like your parents?
I used to, a long time ago.... but not anymore. Now I just wish I had half of their integrity... and their peace.
