Living in a SMALL town, my mom use to let me sit on her lap and steer when I was just little but at 15 years got my permit and learned then. My Mom was my teacher:)
My first experience of learning how to drive was in Salina Kansas, my dad took me out on the country roads to show me how, and my sister came along for the ride. It was coming along just fine until we came to a T in the road. Instead of putting my foot on the brake, I floored the gas pedal. My dad was yelling "Step on the Brakes" and I was yelling "I am! I am!" and the car was going faster and faster.... Next thing you know, we had driven into a ditch, up a small embankment, through a barbed wire fence, and into a wheat field. At which point, the car died and, mercifully, we stopped. My foot was still jammed down on the gas. There was a stunned moment of silence, and then we all burst out laughing....
The car was OK, only a few dings and scratches, and my dad was able to drive us out of the field, and that was the last time I drove a car until I was well out of highschool and living on my own.
My boyfriend taught me how to drive, which was very brave of him - and he was really patient and nice about it too. Luke Davis, what a great guy!
I started out with my dad teaching me to drive, but I kept coming home crying because he yelled at me!! So then my mom said she would teach me instead. And that was much nicer! :) She wasn't a yeller!
My mom made my sister and I both learn how to drive a stick shift before we could get our driver's licenses. They kept an old 1956 Chevy just for me to learn to drive a stick shift on. Then after I learned, they sold it. It's come in mighty handy on numerous occasions to know how to drive a stick and I've had a few of them over the years. Thanks, Mom!
