To me, a successful life is defined by how happy you are. It's so easy to get caught up in the whole "whoever dies with the most stuff wins" thing and a lot of people live their lives that way, but to me, I feel successful if I have great relationships in my life, if I love and feel loved, and if I'm able to live comfortably - and I must admit to live comfortably does take some $$ - at least for me. I think money can HELP buy success and happiness but it can't in and of itself.
That's a good point Cindy, I was thinking of people who I thought might qualify as having had successful lives.. and Steve Irwin, my parents, and a number of obvious celebrities (oprah, bonjovi, raquel welch, bill gates.. to name a few) came to mind...
And I was thinking that to be successful, it might be important to actually succeed at something.. or to have at least spent your life walking your talk..
But when you mentioned happiness.. I thought.. yes.. happiness.. very important in life.. and what would be the point in succeeding with anything if you weren't happy? Howard Hughs for example.. rich yes - a successful life? no.
And I think that the people I mentioned above are all happy people.. happy because they succeeded, or happy because they are rich, or happy because they can do a lot.. or happy because they love their work.. it doesn't matter why..
So.. Cindy, I think you nailed it. And I agree, money can't BUY happiness, but worrying about not having enough money, and stressing over unpaid bills, and going hungry and doing without, and feeling lonely and overwhelmed, and hating your job certainly makes it more difficult to experience happiness - although I do think it can be done no matter what the life circumstances happen to be.
A succesful life is when you have found your niche and a project that will go on after you leave ..You wake up eager each morning to continue the endeavor..just in case you can watch what is going on after your soul leaves your body!
